Recently I purchased a Ubiquity EdgeRouter Lite to replace an old Dell Optiplex running VyOS in my dorm. I was impressed at how easy it was to set up, and how compatible RouterOS configurations are with VyOS configurations. However, I found the EdgeRouter to be much slower with OpenVPN tunnels.
In each of the following images, the first test is through the VPN tunnel, and the second test is with a non-tunneled connection. The first image shows a test download using the Dell Optiplex, and the second image shows the same test download using the EdgeRouter. This test shows a 59% drop in throughput after switching to the EdgeRouter.
